Jose Maldonado, March 20, 1937 - October 19, 2007. "Pase por aque." (He passed through here.) Culberto "Jose" Maldonado passed away unexpectedly on October 19, 2007, while visiting family in Texas. Jose was born on March 20, 1937, in Richmond, Texas, to Rafael and Angela Maldonado. A long-time resident of Colorado Springs, Jose had recently moved with his wife Gloria to Madison, Wisconsin, and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Jose is survived by his wife Gloria Chiunti-Maldonado, daughters Helen Maldonado (Scott) and Karen Klein (Jarod) of Colorado Springs and step-children Dana Maya (Courtney) of Madison, Wisconsin, and Larry Maynard (Oralia) of Denver. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, his Luna, and many relatives. Jose served for 21 years in the Air Force before retiring as a Spanish instructor at the Air Force Academy. Later, he retired as Human Resources Executive Director for two restaurant chains. Prior to that, he was Human Resources Executive Director for School District 11 and Employee Relations Manager for Inmos. He also taught at Pueblo Community College and conducted seminars in the US, Mexico, and England. Jose will be remembered for his service to the Hispanic community. He served on the Board of Directors for AARP after serving as AARP State President of Colorado. Jose was a board member for Pikes Peak Hospice and a member of Colorado Springs Medical Ethics Committee and the Area Agency on Aging. He served as Deputy State Director for LULAC and volunteered for Ecumenical Social Ministries and Silver Key. He was a founding member of Los Padrinos, a USAFA organization which sponsors Hispanic cadets. Moving to Mexico had brought Jose closer to his ethnic roots and he had already begun to continue his humanitarian work in the Mexican community. Culberto "Jose" Maldonado will be greatly missed. Published in The Gazette on 3/9/2008.
